What is your position regarding photoprotection and vitamin D supplementation?
Photoprotection per se is not a risk factor for vitamin D deficiency, and no supplementation is required
Intensive photoprotection could contribute to vitamin D deficiency in patients at risk (dark skin, obese, indoor-dwelling). These patients should be recommended vitamin D supplementation based on their dietary habits
All individuals regularly applying photoprotectors should be considered at risk for vitamin D deficiency and should be recommended supplementation based on dietary habits
Until clinical studies are performed to confirm a relationship between photoprotection and vitamin D deficiency, there is no basis for any recommendation. Supplementation should be reserved for individuals with demonstrated vitamin D deficiency
