3 - The scientific method
As in other areas of Medicine or Science, investigation in Dermatology implies following and applying the rules established by the Scientific Method. According to the Scientific Method, there are six main steps to a research project: 1) understanding the problem or object of the investigation; 2) proposing a hypothesis and a rationale; 3) collecting data; 4) carefully analyzing the data collected; 5) interpreting the findings obtained during the experimental procedure, and 6) drawing conclusions from these findings that may be extended to other cases or investigations. An important aspect of a study that employs the scientific method is its ability to be reproduced by other researchers when the details of the experiment are carefully provided (e.g., in the format of a scientific article). This is possible in empirical research, but in other situations, reproducing the same data would only be a theoretical possibility.
